MOTOR TRANSPORT

AUCKLAND PROPOSAL lllnfrert Prpne Afaoriatinnl AUCKLAND, 15th March. A proposal that motor transport be brought under the provisions of the Transport Licensing Regulations will be introduced at a conference of New Zealand Drivers’ Unions in Wellington, commencing on 30th March, by a remit from the Auckland Union. The question may also form the subject of a deputation to the Minister of Transport. The responsibility for issuing licenses in centres now rests with local authorities. It is contended that under this system licenses are issued without regard to whether the licensee is capable of operating on an economic basis. “We believe that the bringing of town operators under the Motor Transport Act would eliminate the unnecessary waste caused by overlapping and dead mileage.” said Mr L. G. Matthews, secretary of the Auckland Union, to-dav. He said that in Auckland carriers’ stands at all times of the day had trucks standing idle for hours ori end.
