FREEZING WORKS

VALUED SERVICES PRESENTATION TO MR J. R. GAUKRODGER An enjoyable “Smoke-Oh” was arranged by the staff of the Nelson Freezing Co. Ltd., on Saturday evening, to say farewell to Mr J. R. Gaukrodger, who has found it necessary, owing to illhealth. to resign his position of foreman with the company. The general manager, Mr J. A. Mil- I chell, occupied the chair. A large number of employees were present; also Mr Geo. Manson, chairman of directors; Mr Geo. Macdonald, director; Mr S. Palmer, Oppenheimer Casing Co.: and Messrs a Best Bros., carriers. Following the lo3 r al toast, Mr Mitchell in proposing the toast to the guest of ° the evening, spoke in very high terms of praise of the faithful and conscientious manner in which Mr Gaukrodger C had always performed his duties over ?. period of nearly 25 years. The company was very sorry that such a step had become necessary, but he assured * Mr Gaukrodger that if, after a long rest, he was able to return to work, some suitable position would be found. Or, behalf of the staff, employees and drafters of the company, he wished Mr Gaukrodger a very speedy return to good health and strength, and handed him a well-filled wallet, as some ex- ‘ pression of the esteem in which he was J held by his fellow workers. Mr G. Manson, on behalf of the Board of Directors, spoke of the very high esteem in which Mr Gaukrodger had been held by the Board, and also his own personal opinion after many years association. He presented from the company a very substantial cheque in appreciation of the many years of £ loyal service, and extended their best j wishes for a speedy recovery. Mr G. Macdonald, as a director, fur- t ther endorsed the chairman’s remarks. Mr S. Palmer on behalf of himself and the employees under his charge, presented to Mr Gaukrodger a case of pipes, as a remembrance of many years j ; happy association. Speeches by members of various do- t partments of the works, dealing with the friendly relations that had always existed between their respective departments and the foreman, were given by:—Mr N. Strawbridgc. slaughterman: Mr S. Brassington, mutton board; Mr P. Holland, freezing chambers; Mr D. Me-! Allister, engine-room; Mr G. Gough, fruit stores; Mr J. Hodson. wool and skin: Mr E. Jorgenson, casual labourers: Mr E. Jewell, meat inspectors; Mr C. Best, carriers; Mr R. Prowse. exemployees. Apologies were received from: The 1 secretary, Mr G. Brown; the super- ? vising meat inspector, Mr H. Howard; f the engineers on shift; and the company drafters, Messrs A. H. Baigent, A. Canton, F. Hodgkinson, and C. and F. P O’Brien. 1 Mr Gaukrodger on rising to reply was accorded musical honours, and hearty cheers. He thanked all concerned for their overwhelming presentations, and the many kind remarks that had been ( passed. He went on to trace out the growth of the works from the earliest days of his association up to the pre-1 sent day.
