PROPER EQUIPMENT WANTED DISCUSSION BY SOUTH ISLAND MOTOR UNION SIGNPOSTS AND TAR-SEALJNG The half-yearly meeting of the South Island Motor Union concluded in Nelson yesterday afternoon. The president, Mr W. R. Carey, was in the chair. It was decided to recommend that with the object of unifying road signals, the associations affiliated to the S.I.M.U. adopt for all future work on direction j signs, the single arm type a sadopted by j the International Convention on Road Signals. Mr W. Gillies (North Otago) moved: “That the Minister of Transport and the local bodies concerned, be approached with a view to having the ha in highway leading out of the South Island cities and principal boroughs signposted as ‘Great North Road’ or ‘Great South Road,’ as the case may be.” Mr J. Hawkes (executive) thought it would be a fine thing if they could get the road sealed for the centenary Mr Main thought that it could be left to associations to decide what to do. The remit was carried. Mr R. Wanden (Marlborough) moved the following remit: That the executive be asked to make representations to the Transport Department requesting that there be a stricter enforcement of the regulations regarding size of caravans and caravan trailers; and further request that all cars towing caravans be equipped with a periscope or other device for the purpose of rear vision that standard equipment be laid down fo»* couplings between car and caravan or trailer; these latter to be also equipped with mudguards where necessary,

and that an investigation be asked for' into the question of using car front axles for trailer axles. He said there were regulations deal- j mg with the height of caravans already. , His association hoped that something would be done to enforce the regulations. Mr J. S. Hawkes (executive) seconded the motion. He referred to the couplings and said that there was also the question of car front axles being used, and sometimes not being satisfactory, lie thought it necessary that certain things should be carried out. They did not want to restrict their use, but there were some roads where caravans would have to be prohibited. Mr J. Palliser (South Canterbury) said that certificates of fitness were necessary for caravans. The remit was carried. PETROL TAXATION ; The Union passed a motion regretI ting that the reply received from Uie Prime Minister in regard to petrol tax- , ation did not indicate any likelihood of an early reduction of taxation.
