REGIMENTAL CLUB

SPORTING AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES FIRST ANNUAL MEETING OFFICERS ELECTED At the annual meeting of the N.M. and W.C. Regimental Sports and Social Club, held in the Drill Hall those present were:—R.S.M. Williams (in the chair), Lieutenant Blair. Sergeants Alborough and Stallard, Corporals Gibbs and Simister (secretary). Apologies were received from the following: Lieutenant Pritchard. Q.M.S. Sowman, Q.M.S. Pahl, Sergeant Todd and Corporal May. The annual report and balance sheet were presented, the year closing with a fair credit balance. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron: Colonel C. B. Brereton. President: R.S.M. Williams (re-elect-ed). Vice presidents: All acting and reserve officers (in the Nelson unit) were appointed vice-presidents. Secretary and treasurer: Corporal Simister (re-elected). Auditor: Lieutenant Holcroft. The committee for fhe following year was made up from representatives from the officers, N.C.O.’s, and men of the unit. Sub-committee chairmen were appointed to govern the different sporting and social activities in which the regiment takes part. ANNUAL REPORT The first annual report of the Nelson, Marlborough, and West Coast Regimental Sports and Social Club, presented by the secretary, stated: In submitting the first annual report of the club I would like to state that although this report is titled the first annual report the club has been in existence for the past four years, but owing to lack of support, financial and otherwise, was unable to be as active as it was during the last year. Social activities: During the year under review the club has held several successful evenings. A dance at Stoke

in April last, although not a great success in numbers, placed 30s to the credit of our account. Then a dinner and smoke concert was arranged, the guests being the Petty Officers of H.M.S. Leander. The number at the function was approximately 65 and five of these came from as far as Greymouth. The evening cost the Club approximately £7 and here we must congratulate the N.C.O.’s for their wonderful gesture in handing the club thei: half year's pay to square up this expense. Only this action enabled the club to carry on. The club next held the 6th annual military ball, which was an outstanding success in every way, the club benefiting to the amount of £l7. The annual football and basketball teams’ dinner was next, and this was well attended and was followed by a dance which was also well patronised. Football: Last season we entered a team in the junior competition and although we were among the “also started” we were not disgraced on any occasion. A match was played against a team from H.M.S. Leander and ended in a win for the navy after a very hard game. The team travelled to Motueka to play a match with a team from Lieut. Tomlinson’s platoon. After a very good game we eventually won. The Motueka team invited our team and its supporters to a dinner and it was here that Lieutenant Rowe very generously donated a cup to be played for by the Nelson-Motueka units. Sergeant Alborough, Corporals May and Wiechern, Pye Smith, P. Hansen and G. Henry are to be congratulated on their inclusion in the A and B junior representative teams. Basketball: Two teams were entered in the inter-house basketball tournament the team being beaten in the last game for first place. However, the team rallied and won the knock-out competition. Sergeant Alborough and Corporal May are to be congratulated on their inclusion in the Nelson team that played in the New Zealand championships. National Fitness Week: During this week the club entered one relay team ir the Athletic Association competition, and two relay teams in the inter-house swimming. Four members of the regiment assisted as instructors to the house teams for the Girls’ Quickstep Competition. Personal: During the year we have lost the valuable support of Lieutenant E. N. Tomlinson and Lieutenant H. A. Rowe, both of whom have left the district. We also had a change in the management. Lieutenant R. I. Blair resigned the position of secretary after some years’ valuable service to the club. Corporal Simister was appointed to the office of secretary and treasurer. Financial: From the above it will be gathered that the club's finances are ' not high. Lack of finance cramps the activities of the club, but although as yet we have not participated, we are expecting to get quite a lot of h-»lp from regiment funds in the near future. In conclusion I would like to thank the members of the committee for the help during the year and can only hope that more members of the unit will copy the example set by the committee trat has administered the activities of the social club during the year.
