HIGHER WAGES GRANTED IN r WELLINGTON DISTRICT ’United Prtus* Association WELLINGTON, This Day. | An increase in wages of 2s 6d a week I to city workers, within 20 miles radius 1 of Wellington, and 5s a week to country workers was agreed on by the parties to the Wellington district male hairdressers’ dispute when conciliation proceedings were resumed yesterday. Mr M. J. Reardon was the presiding commissioner, and agreement ] was reached on all clauses. The new minimum wages are £5 7s 6d a week for city journeymen, £5 5s a week for country journeymen. £6 10s for workers employed as managers, and 3s an hour (3d increase) for casual workers. Women employed on men’s work are to be paid the same rates. A 44-hour week is to be worked, exclusive of meal hours, between 8 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on four days of the week, between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. on one day. and between 8 a.m. and noon on the day of the statutory half-holiday. The hours clause is not to apply to managers. One hour is to be allowed for a meal between 11.45 a.m. and 2.15 p.m.. and between 4.45 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the late night As a result of a decision by postal ballot, saloons are to be closed on the statutory half-holiday, at 12 noon. The other closing hours are 6 p.m. on four days of the week, and 9 p.m. on the late night. The holiday clause provides for the following as holidays: Christmas Day. Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, and the following day. Good Friday, Easier Monday, the King’s Birthday. Labour Day, and Anniversary Day. In Hawkes Bay Anniversary Day is to be replaced by show day, except in Hastings. An annual holiday of seven working days on full pay after 12 months’ employment is provided.

The wages clause is to operate from 13th February, and the others from a date to be determined by the Arbitration court. The term of the award is to be one year.
