Cardinal Pacclli now stands out as the probable choice of 27 non-Italian Cardinals, while 35 Italians still apparently favour Cardinal Massiini. Vatican City circles point out. that, in addition (o the foreign votes, Cardinal I’acelli is strongly favoured by many Italians, despite the tradition against the election of the secretary of the late Lope. Cardinal Pacelli needs two-thirds of the votes. The conclave formally begins to-morrow. VOTING TO BEGIN TO-DAY (Received 2nd March, 10.0 a.m.) ’ VATICAN CITY, Ist March. Led by a choir singing “Veni Creator” and a prelate holding the Papal Cross, 62 cardinals walked in procession before entering the conclave. The great bell of St. Peter’s rang three times. Swiss Guards with lighted torches and architects inspected the doors to ensure that they were locked inside and outside. The deed of closing was then read and signed. Voting will begin tomorrow.
