The Federal Cabinet, sitting in Sydney to-day. approved the establishment of a standing army of 10.000 men. who will be enlisted at the rate of 2000 a year over the next five years. The cost of such an army is estimated at £4,000,000 a year. It was announced a week ago that the Federal Government had decided to increase the permanent military forces by 2000 men. The present permanent forces number about 3000. The strength of the volunteer militia has reached 61.359. The Minister of External Affairs. Mr W. M. Hughes, announced that enlistment would be continued until about 82.000 men had been secured.
