GOLDBERG INCIDENT
EXPLANATION BY STAFF OF HOTEL WATERLOO Following the publicity over what has become known as the “Goldberg incident,” the staff of the Hotel Waterloo. Wellington, expressed indignation at what they considered amounted to misrepresentation of their attitude at the time. A meeting of the staff held on Monday evening was addressed by the national secretary of the Hotel Workers’ Federation, Mr F. G. Young. It was stated subsequently that the staff were d opinion that in published statements the inference had been drawn in certain quarters that they had participated in the alleged bonus of £5 for “those who voted Labour at the last generl election.” A further statement appearing in the Press about the incident suggested, the hotel staff contended, that shortly before the election Mr Goldberg had addressed a meeting of the Hotel Waterloo staff i.i the interests of the National Party. It was agreed at Monday’s meeting that there was no truth in either of these suggestions. Mr Young said last evening that he wished to state in fairness to the Hotel Waterloo staff that there had never been the slightest doubt of their integrity or loyalty to the Hotel Workers’ Union.
