PAUL SCHRAMM

A BRILLIANT ARTIST Paul Schramm, the celebrated Austrian pianist, noted for his inspired interpretations of Beethoven and Chopin and for his impeccable technicque and fine musicianship, was hailed as an infant prodigy during an early tour throughout Austria, Germany and the Balkan States. In 1908 he made his home in Berlin at a time when Germany was the centre of the European musical world. He was a pupil of the great Leschetizky, the teacher of Paderewski, and he himself achieved fame as a teacher, conducting his own private classes in Berlin, as well as large classes at the Municipal conservatoriums of Thuringia and Silesia and also at Rotterdam in Holland. Later he toured with his own instrumental ensemble, the Austrian Trio, and conducted the Symphony Orchestra of Batavia for three successful seasons. In the words of a prominent European musical authority in a review of Paul Schramm’s work, “As a pronounced individualist Paul Schramm knows how to grasp that powerful individualist, Beethoven. His personality reacts very directly, very intimately and sublimely to Beethoven’s spirit. His interpretation is purely classical and at the same time brandnew and spontaneous. I think perhaps Beethoven himself would have interpreted his v/orks like that or would have wished them interpreted so. It is all so grand and bold, flaming and profound, a singing soul to which our own soul responds.” Paul Schramm’s first concert in Nelson for the 1939 season will take place on Saturday next in the School of Music. Music lovers are urged to reserve their seats early. The box plan is at Begg’s, where seats may be reserved for Paul Schramm’s second concert on Tuesday, 7th March.
