WAKEFIELD

MEETING OF DOMAIN BOARD At a meeting of the Wakefield Domain Board held in the Domain Rooms last week Mr C. C. Hooper was in the chair, and the following members were also present: Messrs Mead, Robertson, Wilkens, McPherson, Hodgson, Ricketts, Martin and Shuttleworth. A letter was received from the Lands and Survey Department advising the Board of the appointment of Mr Don McPherson to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr M. Eden. The Minister of Labour advised that his department would supply all labour free of charge if the Board decided to build swimming baths in the Domain, provided the work was completed by 31st March. No money was available for the purchase of material, all of which must be borne by the board. As labour was not available for such a short time it was decided to take no further action. The Waimea County clerk advised the board’s application for 30 bridge planks had been granted. The secretary was instructed to thank the County Council for its action. Members expressed appreciation at the way in which various sports clubs had improved the sporting facilities on the Domain during the summer. The Tennis Club had spent £IOO on a new court and when it had topdresed its presnet courts, which the club hoped to do in the coming season it would possess three first class hard courts. The Croquet Club had taken over the grass courts recently vacated by the Tennis Club dnd with the help of the board had turned them into a very good croquet lawn. A pavilion had been built and levelling operations, which were to be carried out shortly, would considerably increase the area.

It was decided to apply to the Labour Department for the services of two men until 31st March. Work to be carried out by the men will include, shifting the pump off the football playing area, erecting seats on edges of the tennis courts and bank, repairing bridge, topdressing and levelling croquet courts, extending footpath and concreting conveniences.
