DOG SECTION

judge’s Remarks In remarking on the dog section at the Show the judge, Mr A. G. Betts, said:— This show is singular in one respect in that there is not. so far as I know, anyone in the immediate locality of the show who is in any way interested in the breeding and showing of pedigree dogs. All the entries come from

outside, mostly from Nelson and Marlborough. and in one notable instanct from Christchurch. There were about 35 dogs entered, some few were late entrants and these were not included either in the catalogue. or in the judge's books; so that the numbers were put in either by the judge's steward or by the judge. The quality of most of the entri?s was very good and in many instances they were shown in very good order indeed. The class of bulldogs were very good indeed, and I had no hesitation in allotting the challenges here. There were four dogs in the open class—all were typical—and all in good condition and ! were nicely handled. Open bitch. Mrs Mac Donnell’s “Bonnie Dinkabelle” ap- | pealed to me very much. Rough-Coated CollicS were few and all were more or less out of coat at this time of the year. Scotch Terriers, two only, the dog, Mrs Brougham’s O'Hazledene Roby was a nicely balanced terrier, with a Ion? head, strong muzzle, good body, hard coat and was nicely put down. Smooth Fox Terriers —two only, both above the average, the bitch shown by Mr and Mrs Elliott (Tvnedale Tuppence) was a nicely balanced terrier, in good condition, good body, coat, leg* and feet, a trifle short in head and a wee bit “cheeky.” Irish Setters were a good class. The open winning dog being Mr C. Pat- | chett’s Kerry Kelly, a very nice dog shown in great nick, lovely coat, slight- , ly heavy in body. Cocker Spaniels were quite a fa.r , class—open dogs winner being Mr J. Grayling's Whiphard of Norgian, and ihe best bitch Mr Oliver’s well-known Imported bitch Desma of Ware. As usual with this lady, she was not happy in the ring, and does not do herself justice. Other than black cockers, the only one calling for special mention was Mr Akersten’s Blue Girl of Kopai. She is quite a nice bitch. Dachsunds—were quite a feature, four of them, two recently imported I from England and the other two. I 1 think, bred in Australia. Both chal- [ lenges went to Mrs D. Hopkins two en- . tries. The other two have not yet be- . come acclimatised and were not lookI ing their best, having only been in New . Zealand for about three months, i Springer—one only—Mr Allan Elliott’s Sherry, but what a good one. i I had no hesitation in awarding this • dog the best in show. I heartily congratulate Mr Elliott on the condition ■ Sherry was shown in. I The runner-up to best in show was ■ Mrs Ridgen's Ch. Toydom Pung-Kee. ‘ the imported Pekingese from England • and put down in fine condition. I desire to thank Mr Brough and Mr ' Olliver for their assistance in getting • the dogs into the ring, and also the secretary of the Show. Mrs A. G. Schroder of Rai Valley.
