IMMENSE strides have been made in grassland management during the past ten years. Methods of working pastures have advanced with distinct advantage to all who have adopted them. The necessity for supplementary feed, with its attendant high labour costs and uncertainties, has been reduced to a minimum, and in many instances obviated altogether. Increased lambing percentages have gone hand in hand with increases in carrying capacity of land never before thought possible. Fat lamb production has been revolutionised by enormous increases in the percentage of Fat Lambs “ straight-off-the-Mothers.” Ewe and hogget mortality has been reduced to a minimum. Wool clips have improved in quality and increased in weight. And how has this been done ? It can be answered briefly in three words —“ SUPERPHOSPHATE ” void “LIME.” There is no arguing about * Wherever land has been adequately limed and regularly and consistently Top-dressed with Superphosphate—wonderful progress has been made and returns secured that pay for Superphosphate many, many times over. The aim of every farmer should be the production of lambs that best conform with the requirements of the “Home market.” It should be remembered the quality and small joints arc what the British housewife demands . . . this demand is best met, and most economically met, by fat lambs straight off the mothers. New Zealand must cut down the export of overweight lambs. Overweight lambs are uneconomical to the farmer. Cut down the production of overweight lambs and the “Quota” restrictions are automatically overcome . . . one pound less weight per lamb in itself almost covers the 3 per cent. Quota reduction. Fat lambs straight olf the mothers are the most economical to produce and are best qualified to meet the requirements of the British market . . . Farmers who, by adequate and consistent Top-dressing with Superphosphate and Lime, have brought their pastures to a high level of fertility for the production of fat lambs straight off the mothers, have nothing to fear from any Quota reduction. and NOW Is the Time to do it!
