SUSPENDING OPERATIONS
Y.M.C.A. IN NELSON GENERAL SECRETARY TRANSFERRED Mr C. L. Cato, General Secretary and Physical Director of the Nelson Y.M.C.A., will be leaving Nelson on Monday next to take over the work of the Hutt Valley Y.M.C.A. It is understood that the directors of the local association have decided to suspend operations this season and no appointment to replace Mr Cato will be rr.cde. The Y.M.C.A. buildings have been let for the purpose of skating, and the rentals received therefrom, stated Mr Cato to-day, should at least free the association from any debts that it may at present owe. Several of the Y.M.C.A. gymnasts will endeavour to keep their activity going during the winter months. Mr Cato said that it was to be hoped that perhaps the military authorities would be able to carry on the basketball activities started by the Y.M.C.A. in Nelson, and in which the Nelson girls hold the national championship. It was a rather regrettable feature that during Fitness Week an organisation that had made a large contribution to the sporting life of the community should be suspending operations. It was to be hoped that next year the Y.M.C.A. in Nelson would be able to j re-open with the necessary facilities to I provide a wider programme of activi- I ties than ever before.
