BIRMINGHAM CYCLIST’S BID EARLY START IN THE RAIN IBy Air Mail—Own Correspondent 1 LONDON, 7th January. Further attempts are being made in England to beat the world cycling milej age record of 62.657 miles held by the Australian “Ossie” Nicholson. I Bernard Bennett, a 20-year-old Birmingham cyclist, set out in the rain at 4.30 a.m. on New Year’s day from | Acocks Green. Birmingham. His aim is to cycle 68.000 miles during 1939. After riding to Gloucester and back Bennett, with 99 miles to his credit, ati tended a reception at Birmingham. Councillor E. R. Cannings wished him ! luck in the name of the city. Over 150 ! cyclists cheered Bennett as he rode off Ito complete the 200 miles he has set himself to cover each day. 1 Bennett has been riding 170 miles a day for more than six months in preparation for this attempt. Pushed off by Captain Eyston. motor nee. ex-racing cyclist Tommy Godwin, jof Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire. : started out yesterday from Northwood ' Hills, Middlesex, also bent on beating Nicholson's record.
