ceived a cordial welcome from a large gathering of representative citizens at the wharf to-day. in an interview Mr Bruce said that if peace was to be maintained and the ideals for which the democracies stood were to endure, then the democracies would have to co-operate. Australia thus had an important part to play. He was quite sure that the people would rise to whatever heights circumstances demanded in the future. SCRUB FIRE THREATENS STATE FOREST (United Press Association! WHANGAREI, 23rd January. Fire threatened the Puketi State forest, adjoining Mangarnuku, yesterday. An outbreak in scrub and gorse, fanned by a high wind, swept toward the edge of the bush, but forestiy officers and others prevented the fire spreading. Five bun. dred acres of gorse and scruTi were burnt.
