j CAR PLUNGES INTO RIVER ONE MAN DROWNED [O.P.A.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright! MELBOURNE, 21st January. The radio announcer Eric Welch wai unable to broadcast the Caulfield races to-day, as was iiis custom, owing to a sensational motoring experience overnight. He was driving his car, accompanied by two companions, Reginald Tonkin and James Kelly, when the vehicle plunged into the river Yarra, near Spencer street docks. Welch and Tonkin got through the car windows, rose to the surface and were rescued by men on the wharf, but Kelly, who was impria. oned in the submerged car, was drowned. Tonkin and Kelly were member* of tha Victoria Racing Club's staff.
