CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL

START IN 1940 STONE TO BE LAID BY PAPAL LEGATE It is the aim of the Roman Catholic authorities in Wellington to lay the foundation-stone of the Roman Catholic Cathedral on the site at the corner of Cambridge Terrace and Buckle street iri February, 1940, the Centennial year of the Dominion. The building of the cathedral has been mooted for some years, but an advance was made recently with the acquisition of me moperty on the site. The cathedral trustees now own a large block extending from St. Patrick's College to the -orner of Buckle street, on the Cambridge Terrace frontage and running up Buckle street past Sussex street as far as the present Catholic school. It is proposed that the foundationstone should be laid by the Papal Legate, who is to be specially sent to attend the Catholic Congress from Ist to 4t.h February, 1940, in Wellington, the congress being part of the Centennial celebrations. This will be the first occasion on which a Papal Legate will have come to New Zealand, and his visit has been approved by the Holy See by reason of the fact that the congress is to be part of a national celebration. The name of the Legate is not known, but it is expected that he will be an F glish-speaking cardinal. He will take precedence over the Apostolic Delegate (Archbishop PanicoL of Sydney. who will also attend the congress. The Legate will be Ihe second cardinal to have visited New Zealand, the first having been the late Cardinal Moran. Archbishop of Sydney, who «ttended the opening of St. Patrick’s College. During liis present trip to England. Europe and the United States, Archbishop O’Shea is investigating hu vh building, and it is expected that on his return to Wellington about the °nd of March further details of the proposal will be announced
