PULLED RABBI’S BEARD
LABOURER ON ASSAULT CHARGE FINE OF £2 IMPOSED fUnited Press Association! WELLINGTON, This Day. Admitting pulling the beard of a Jewish Rabbi in Auckland, Roy Baxter Caulton, 28, a labourer, was charged before Mr Luxford S.M., and pleaded guilty to assault. Sub-Inspector Dempsey said that on 25th November Rabbi Henesh Law was walking along Pitt street, Auckland, towards Karangahape road when defendant, who was then the subject of a prohibition order and had had some liquor, met him and pulled his beard. The rabbi remonstrated and defendant went away but came back with a companion and his companion pulled the rabbi's beard. The rabbi endeavoured to hold the two men but was unsuccessful, but while following them he obtained the help of a constable. Defendant and the other two men entered a boardinghouse and the rabbi positively identified the defendant.
Defendant was allowed bail at Auckland but did not appear the following day and was later arrested in Wellington. He had already been dealt with for breach of prohibition. A fine of £2 was imposed for assault, to be paid within 14 days.
