REBEL ADVANCE CONTINUES
BRAVE LOYALIST SOLDIER DEFENDED POST UNTIL KILLED LERIDA, 18th January. The rebels, en route to Igualada, captured Pons. The advance continues, despite ’fog and bad weather. Troops have also reached Barcelona Province at several points south of Igualada. The Barcelona correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says that Dr. Negrin presided at a meeting of Cabinet, at which Senor Companys, President of Catalonia, was also present. The city was cheered by news of heroic deeds at the front. A soldier whose name is unknown defended a hill alone with a machine-gun against the repeated attacks of two companies and heavy artillery fire for seven hours when a trench mortar shell killed him. Two soldiers, capturing an enemy tank, occupied it and, operating the guns, drove off other tanks.
A captured Italian admits coming to Spain on 23rd December, proving that new' troops were sent after the withdrawal of 10,000 volunteers.
