OLD CEMETERY RESERVE

FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS SUGGESTED RHODODENDRON DELL AND FLOWERING SHRUBS The establishment of a Rhododendron Dell, and other improvements, including the planting of flowering trees and massed hydrangeas, are suggested by the City Superintendent of Reserves (Mr A. White) for the Old Cemetery Reserve

The superintendent submitted the following report to last night’s meeting of the City Council:— “As instructed a general line out of the new work for this season's planting has been made. An ideal Rhododendron Dell could be made of the southern side of this reserve, introducing on the higher levels such subjects as flowering apples, peaches, prunes and cherries and kowhai.

“The southern entrance would look well massed with hydrangeas. The western boundary of Brougham street could be planted in flowering cherries and scarlet oaks, with one or two specimen trees planted in suitable locations. The number of trees required would be 104 rhododendrons, 200 hydrangeas and 50 flowering trees. “The dell would also be a suitable place for naturalising spring flowering bulbs.”

The chairman of the Reserve Committee. Councillor E. R. Neale, said many people were now taking a greater interest in the improvements to the city reserves, and it was thought that some citizens might like to donate the necessary plants suggested. It was not that the council wished to evade the little cost entailed, but an effort was being made to encourage citizens to take a greater interest in the gardens. The Arbor Day committee was willing to assist in that direction.

Councillor Neale added that he was very pleased with tne work which had been carried out at the Old Cemetery.
