“EXTRAORDINARY EVIDENCE”
WITNESS ADMITS PREVIOUS STATEMENT UNTRUE PEDESTRIAN KILLED BY CAR AT HOKITIKA fUnited Press Association! HOKITIKA, 17th January. “In view of the somewhat extraordinary evidence of the principal witness, I do not propose to comment on the evidence.” In these words the Coroner returned a verdict that George Alburt David Edwards died in the Westland Hospital on Ist January as the result of injuries received the previous night when he was knocked down by a motor car driven by Frederick Charles Pascoe, on the main highway, at Three Mile. The principal witness, Pascoe, stated in the course of examination, that he did not know Foley. He had not been in his company on the day of the tragedy nor was he in the car at the time of the accident with Pascoe. Under police pressure, witness acknowledged that his previous statement was untrue, giving the excuse that, as Foley was more drunk than sober, he thought it inadvisable to state the actual facts.
