"K" CUP CHANGES HANDS

FOR THIRD TIME THIS SEASON NELSON BEAT MIDLAND AT OWEN 37 RUN MARGIN The “K” cr(|pket cup for competi-' tion between the junior representative team in the Nelson District Association, changed hands for the third time this season when Nelson defeated Midland at the Owen ground in a chajlenge game played on Friday and Saturday. After a game of varying fortunes Nelson won by 37 runs. Tapawera were the holders of the j trophy from last season and in the first challenge match this year Waimea took the Cup. Midland then played Waimea and the challengers were successful. In the latest match, the third played this year, Nelson won the trophy. Midland won the toss and sent Nelson in to bat on a sodden matting wicket. The outfield was slow and more than singles difficult to get owing to the long grass in the outfield. 3J HOURS FOR 6 RUNS Green and Coleman opened for Nelson. The first fifteen overs were maidens and twenty-one overs produced only two runs, both of which were extras. The ball l*ept low but the bowl- j ing was not difficult. Play was fre- 1 quently held up by heavy showers and the creases became mud holes, making play fn the morning anything but pleasant. Of Nelson’s first innings total of 73 Goodman scored 35, Reid 14 not out, Hobern 6, while Green took 3$ hours to make 6. Bowling honours were evenly divided among five Midland players. Midland replied with only 54, Russ and Bensemann being the only two to reach double figures. GOODMAN TAKES SIX FOR 17 Goodman bowled excellently for Nelson and secured the fine figures of six wickets for 17 runs. He bowled only nine overs four of which were maidens. Green and Reid opened Nelson’s second innings. Runs came more quickly, the Nelson captain, Reid, making 19 in a short time. McMurray did not get going but Gibbs scored freely and made 51 (3 sixes and 3 fours). Goodman made 11 and Ching 19 not out. “HAT-TRICK” TO BAIGENT Baigent bowl%d the last three Nelson batsmen with consecutive balls and secured the “hat-trick.” The innings realised 114 runs and left Midland 133 to get to save the Cup. Winfield and Russ made a stand for Midland but Reid, who kept on the spot, got seven for 28 and, helped by Goodman (two for 31) dismissed Midland for 96 runs and so Nelson won by 37 runs. The game was played in the best sporting spirit and Nelson were heartily congratulated on their win. On Friday evening the teams were entertained at a dance in Murchison and on Saturday a “K” Cup dance was held in the Owen Hall. The Midland Association was thanked for its lavish hospitality and the accommodation provided left nothing to be desired. Scores: — NELSON First Innings
