IN NEW SOUTH WALES
FLAMES ON 60-MILE FRONT PINE PLANTATIONS DESTROYED IN FEDERAL TERRITORY GOVERNMENT HOUSE IN DANGER (Received 16th January, 12.10 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The town of Yalwal, near Nowra, was virtually wiped out by bushfires. On a 60-mile front flames are now threatening Oberon and the Jenolan caves district. Fires in the Federal capital territory destroyed thousands of acres of valuable pine timber and grazing land and burnt out many homestead buildings. At one stage the possibility of evacuating Government House was contemplated. The damage in Canberra has not been assessed, but the destruction of Government pine plantations alone represents a loss of abcut £250,000.

ESTIMATED AT £2,500,000 (Received 16th January, 12.20 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The “Daily Telegraph” says that fire damage in New’ South Wales and Victoria is estimated to have reached £2,500,000.
