COLLISION NEAR MORMON CITY
FREIGHT TRAIN AND SCHOOL BUS DEATH TOLL UNKNOWN A bus carrying thirty to forty children was struck by a fast freight train six miles north of Lehi in the Salt Lake Valley. Twenty-two were killed and identified but others are minced beyond identification. Two escaped without injury and six are seriously injured. On account of the uncertainty of the number of children that were in the bus the authorities are experiencing difficulty in completing a full death list. Several bushel baskets of flesh and bones were picked up. The train which is called the Flying Ute, was travelling at fifty-two miles an hour. The speed of the bus is unknown. An Indian who was riding on the platform said that he felt a sharp bump and his first thoughts were that the train had collided with cattle. The next minute he saw a small girl flying through the air and then heard screams from every direction. When the train came to a stop, which was by no means sudden, the Indian ran to the first girl’s assistance but she died before he got to her. He said that the screams stopped one by one as each died. The bus was completely demolished.
