THE YEAR IN RETROSPECT —Some New Zealand Events

On the top left is the Imperial Airways’ flying-boat, Centaurus, which spent last New Year’s Day in New Zealand on completion of the outward survey flight from England in connection with the extension of the regular Empire service from Australia. On the right is the giant C.P.R. liner, Empress of Britain, 42,348 tons, which berthed at Pipitea Wharf, Wellington, on Sunday morning, 10th April, in the course of her world cruise. The largest vessel that has visited a New Zealand port, she drew crowds to the wharf and other vantage points. Next is the firstelectrified passenger train arriving at Johnsonville from Wellington on Saturday afternoon, 2nd July. Mrs Sullivan, wife of the Minister of Railways, cut the ribbon which released the train from Wellington. On the right is shown the official opening of Nelson’s new aerodrome by the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, on Saturday afternoon, Bth October. In the centre picture are the principal participants in the ceremony at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Auckland, during which Archbishop O’Shea (right), welcomed the Apostolic Delegate, Bishop Panico (left) to

the Church’s centenary celebrations.. On the left following, is a view of the salvage operations in progress soon after the Auckland Harbour Board’s tug, Te Awhina, sank on 11th August, after being holed through contact with a propeller of the Federal Line’s vessel, Essex. The picture on the right is that of the 19,854-ton HamburgAmerika world-cruise liner, Reliance, lying at Queen’s Wharf, Wellington. Leaving England on Tuesday evening, 15th March, (English time) and flying via Cairo, Basra, Allahabad, Singapore, Penang, Darwin and Sydney, Flying-Officer A. E. Clouston (son of Mr and Mrs R. E. Clouston, of Neudorf) and Mr Victor Ricketts, reached Blenheim aerodrome shortly after half past four on the following Sunday afternoon. The bottom picture shows the D.H. Comet aeroplane, “Australian Anniversary, in which the flight \\a* made, just after it touched ground at the Blenheim Aerodrome.
