A well-known music-hall actor, who lias been “top of the bill’ all over Britain as well as in Australia and America, left the Bankruptcy Court, London, this week full of hope for the future. Neil McKay—a few year-; ago his name shone in bright lights from West End theatres had just heard his public examination in bankruptcy closed. Very soon he will be back behind the footlights earning £6O a week as “Buttons” in “Cinderella” at the Hippodrome, Belfast. McKay’s real name is Neil McNeil Walker: lie is only 39
lliis week in the Bankruptcy Court, it was stated that his liabilities were £1,130, with no assets.
He presented his petition because was pressed for £413 income-tax arrears He attributed his insolvency to reduced income, losses on ventures and ill-health. I.i the last three years his earnings had averaged only £6OO a year. “Once I received £IOO a week as a first-class comedian,” he said. “I can get £6O a week now. But there are those weeks in between Even if you are ‘resting’ you still have to appear in the right places.”
