PUBLIC RELIEVED

DISMISSAL OF OGPU CHIEF MOSCOW. 9th December. The public is relieved by the dismissal of the ruthless Ogpu chief, M. Nikolai Yezhoff, “the avenging sword of the revolution,” and the greatest “purge' expert,” in favour of M. Stalin’s fellow- j gorgian. M. Laurenti Beria. This is i believed to portend a change in police j methods, though the cessation of re- i pressive measures is unlikely. M. Yezhoff. who is tubercular, osten- j sibly resigned for health reasons, but ! he is not completely out of favour because he retains membership of the political bureau and the control commission. He succeeded M. Yagoda. who was shot as a traitor. M. Beria is scholarly and is generally popular.
