Milner. Examiner street 4 JUDGES’ COMMENT A statement of comment by the judges One of the main features in frontage gardening competitions is to encourage the opening Up of the view from the street, so that the public may share in the enjoyment of beautiful flowers and shrubs tastefully arranged. High boundary fences are to be discouraged. but a suitable arrangement of flowers and shrubs, to give beautiful vistas from differing angles, should be aimed at. A very fine example of this idea, combinging boundary walls, shrubs i>nd flowers, can be seen at the corner of Trafalgar and Grove streets. The judges found a difficulty in judging both double and single frontages. They would suggest that separate classes be formed for thlse so that special consideration and encouragement may be given to the smaller cottage garden, with a somewhat limited frontage.

The winning garden in the garden frontage competition showed very good colour and design, and a good perspective effect. The garden w-as not overcrowded. but had a well balanced shrubbery and flower effect. The two outside frontages were kept in perfect order also. The runner-up in this section showed 1 a splendid example of hill-side gardening. with good use of rock walls and fine colour schemes. The winner of the open garden competition had a wonderfully comprehensive display of choice flowers, with a good rockery and herbaceous border. Full advantage was taken of the contour of the section, and a very pleasing arrangement of flowers and shrubs wai the result. This was backed up with a good vegetable section. The outstanding vegetable garden wai that of Mr A. Best, of Cambria street; the quality and quantity of the vegetables being very fine indeed . In general, the judges consider that this initial gardening competition wai a very good one. and the hope is expressed that the competition will grow and have a very useful means of rais--1 ing the standard of gardening in Nelson.
