CLOSING OF MINE

i OLD BLACKBALL WORKINGS I United Press Associaiioul a; GREYMOUTH, Bth December, si It is likely that the old Blackball j - Mine, which has been worked since t 1893, will be closed at an early date. 3 The manager, Mr J. Quinn, stated to- ’ day that a decision to close the mine " had not yet definitely been made. i There are incipient outbreaks of fire ' s in the mine and the strata are reported t.o be moving. In any case, the old y mine "is practically worked out, and could only be operated for about another three months. It had been hoped to keep the mine in action until the new»mine is in operation. If the old mine is closed 40 men will j be out of employment, but it is not expected that much difficulty will be „ experienced in placing them elsewhere. in Endeavours are being made by the j. Minister of Mines and by the Labour Department to have the men placed in other mines in the district.
