GALA AT KAITERITERI BEACH
QUESTION OF CHARGE FOR ADMISSION DEPUTATION TO WAIMEA COUNTY COUNCIL A deputation from the Motueka Returned Boldieis’ Association and the Kaiteriteri Beach Improvement Society waited on tlie Waimea County Council to-day regarding making a charge for admission to Kaiteriteri beach on Boxing Day. Mr F. Smith (R.S.A.) said that it was desired to obtain permission to close the road from the bridge on tire town side and charge a fee of a shilliug for adults to get on the beach for the day. Two members of the Domain Board supported the request as outlined by Mr Smith. The Council commended the deputation for the action it desired to take, but unfortunately it had no power to give the right to close the road as requested, said the chairman, Councillor J. Colder. One could not stop the King’s Highway i i these days. The chairman said he understood that the members of the society had signed a “joint and several” to see that an outstanding debt to the Improvement Society of £BO was paid. The Domain Board desired to get up a function to liquidate this debt. The Council desired to give all tile help that it reasonably could, but could not put a toll gate across the road. Mr Smith said the idea was that through cars would not be charged ; mere1/ an admission charge at the Kaiteriteri bridge for those cars going on to the beach. No car driver would object to being stopped-and asked whether be was going right through, or staying at the beach. The chairman said that the Council might prohibit parking on the road for the day. It was resolved that this suggestion be carried out.
