CRISIS AVERTED

AUSTRALIAN CABINET NATIONAL INSURANCE BILL DROPPED fU P.A.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyriebti CANBERRA, Bth December. The Federal Cabinet to-day decided to drop the National Insurance Bill, which required contributions to begin next May, and to delay the proclamation of the original Act till probably May or June of next year. This decision, says the “Sun’s” Canberra correspondent, solves the problem of the threatened resignation of the Attorney-General, Mr Menzies. and the Treasurer, Mr Casey. Differences over the fate of the Bill had placed the Government in the position of facing the most serious crisis since it was elected to office. The only alternative to abandoning the Bill appeared to be the adoption of a course in the House of Representatives which might have led to the defeat of the Government on an issue sufficiently vital to force an election—the question of the exemption of the rural industries from the insurance scheme.
