In four cases £1 was involved, in the fifth 10s, and the sixth, a railway ticket valued at £1 0s Id. The modus operandi was the answering of advertisements and on receipt of notification of engagement, requesting that portion of the railway fare be forwarded, these latter arrangements being conducted by telegraph. Morpeth used an assumed name, care of Auckland Post Office. He used the ticket mentioned, but did not go to the posit on. It was stated that the idea occurred to him as a result of genuine applications to two farmers at the same time, and both forwarding the fare as requested.
