Astbury, the Home Office air raid precautions expert, in an address to scientists and engineers to-day, described a new incendiary bomb, so light and small, that one large bomber could carry 2000 and release them from containers 20 at a time, falling 250 feet a second and spreading out. “One large bomber, flying in a straight line at 200 miles an hour at 5000 feet, and releasing 20 such bombs a second above an area containing 15 per cent, of buildings, might start a fire of more than 60 to 70 yards,” said Mr Astbury. He added that the bombs contained inflammable metal magnesium, which would burn for 10 to 20 minute,; at 1300 degrees Centigrade.
