Contrary to the usual practice the Wellington wool sale, the first of the series here, did not begin promptly at ; 9. there being some uncertainty as to 1 how export control would affect buyers ; if they could not obtain licenses for ex- i port. Assurances that they could ex- j port having been obtained, the sale pro- j ceeded after some minutes’ delay. I A catalogue of nearly 24.000 bales j was submitted to a full bench, repre-. senting all countries. Considerable interest was attached to the sale, as it | was expected that prices would be as : good as for the corresponding sale last 1 year and equal to the Napier, and so i they were, having regard to the better ! quality of wools offered at the Hawkes j Bay centre. Competition was exceed- | ing!v keen, but buyers were operating within rigid limits. Yorkshire strongly supported the sale, but the Continent was particularly active. Japan appeared an onlooker. New Zealand manufacturers were in the market for lambs. Up to lunch it was evident that some growers had ideas of values above the buyers, but passings were not over frequents
