TAHUNANUI

MEETING OF TOWN BOARD CHAIRMANS VISIT TO WELLINGTON INTERVIEW WITH MINISTER In the absence of the chairman, Mr C. H. Chamberlain, the fortnightly meeting of the Tahunanui Town Board was presided over by Mr C. Palmer. Other members present were Messrs J. Logan, A. Stagg, L. Haywood and T. W. Roberts. Accounts passed for payment amounted to ±: 104 8s 3d. Mr Logan reported that the chairman was at present in Wellington as a member of a deputation waiting on the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Labour. The deputation consisted of representatives of the Waimea County Council and the Richmond Borough Council, who were endeavouring to obtain permission for No. 13 scheme men to lay down mains .for the proposed water reticulation. If the permission was given it will save the ratepayers in the vicinity of 4:2000. It was reported that the Hall Committee bad purchased a new piano for the Town Hall. The committee’s action was approved. The foreman, Mr E. E. Win. reported that the work in Rui street had not progressed as well as had been aticipated. The wet weather had consolidated the filling so that where it had sunk it could be brought up to grade The gravel which came to hand was unsuitable for new work, there being too much sand in it. The gravel was only suitable for footpath work. The streets are now being tidied as labour becomes available. The grader has been over all the roads in the district where needed, except for the new portion of Coronation road, where the grader might have become bogged. On the motion of Mr Stagg, the matter of investigating the type of sand delivered to the Board was left in the hands of the Works Committee, who-are to interview the contractor. Mr G. Blake, the temporary engineer, reported on the main road drainage and drew attention to the iron flap valve attached to prevent sea water from backing up the pipe. By calculation its weight was 901bs and actual test showed it took 251bs to move the flap through an arc of 7$ degrees. This showed the futility of the arrangement which interfered with the normal discharge of the culvert. The lidal high water mark was well defined and it was clear that the sea water was of no consequence to the Main road ditch. CORRESPONDENCE The secretary, Nelson Provincial Centennial Committee, wrote asking the Board to submit any local proposals for a Centennial memorial. It was left to the Clerk to forward the Board’s proposals. A letter from the New Zealand Defence League was received. A. M. Russ drew attention to flooding of his property in Green street. Mr G. Blake, the Board’s engineer, is to report to the Board on the matter. Mr F. I. Ledger submitted a plan and tracing of a property on Coronation road. The plan was approved. Rate arrears of £SB 4s 7d were written off
