ROAD SAFETY

A.B.C.—ALWAYS BE CAREFUL TRAFFIC INSPECTOR ADDRESSES SCHOOL CHILDREN APPROPRIATE SLOGANS ON TRUCKS This week—Road Safety Week—many Nelson motor trucks are displaying appropriate slogans appealing! for careful driving and giving warnings against the taking of risks. The Nelson Fire Brigade is co-operating with the | Nelson Committee and one of the engines is fitted out with suitable signs and slogans for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. The engine is making several trips through the city streets each day. In Wellington and other centres a pennant is being flown from a suitable masthead and will remain up un- 1 til a fatal traffic accident occurs. The suggestion was made in several quarters to-day that the Nelson committee provides a similar pennant. ADDRESSES AT SCHOOLS Mr C. E. Parkinson, the City Traffic Inspector, to-day gave traffic addresses to the children at the Auckland Point, Central and Tasman Street schools and to-morrow he will speak at the Hampden Street and Tahunanui schools. The fire engine was present on each occasion and the slogans referred to by the Inspector who asked all the children to be careful when using the streets otherwise some of them would be spending Christmas in hospital and he was sure none wanted to do that. The A.B.C. of Safety Week was—Always Be Careful. Mr Parkinson said it was necessary for children to be careful at all times when going to and from school when they should keep on the footpaths or walk on • the very edge of the road where there were no footpaths. He appealed to the children not to play on the streets as many of them were doing in various parts of the town. He warned them against wobbling about when riding their cycles and against riding abreast on the city streets. Any boys or girls without good brakes on their cycles should advise their father or mother and have it attended to. It was also necessary to give the correct arm signals when turning corners. In conclusion the Inspector asked the children to read, learn and put into practice the slogan: “From road and danger keep away and find safe places when you play.”
