CHALLENGE TO MR SEMPLE

RENEWED BY HAWKES BAY CHAIRMAN i “MINISTER SHOULD BE MAN j ENOUGH TO ACCEPT IT” 1 United Prrsn Awutciatfoul NAPIER, This Day. j His challenge to the Minister of 1 Public Works, the Hon. R. Seinple, to debate the Hawkes Bay river control issue on a public platform was renewed j by the chairman of the Hawkes Bay i Rivers Board, Mr C. Lassen, in a state- j ment made this morning in reply to Mr Semple’s comments. The challenge had been thrown out i and the Minister should be man enough ; to accept it, Mr Lassen said. “I am not ! surprised to hear that the Minister of j Public Works will not accept the board's 1 challenge to debate the works on the Ngaruroro scheme because it was Pakowhai settlers who madea the charge j and not him,” stated Mr Lassen. “Mr Semple must have a very short memory j because on his last two visits to Napier | he stated, firstly, that the Rivers Board had ‘mucked the job up,’ and secondly that it was a most unsatisfactory job.! He now states had justifiable ! grounds for so doing. This the board , emphatically denies and I am quite pre- j pared to debate the issue that it is Mr ! Semple's interference with the board that has been the whole trouble.’’ (Earlier reference to the matter will | be found on page 10>.
