FIGHT TO A FINISH
GENERAL STRIKE IN FRANCE THREAT BY TRADES UNION APPEAL BY PRIME MINISTER I , C.I’.A.-liy Electric Telegraph-Copy right* PARIS, 27th November. The Government and the Trades Union Confederation are engaging in a fight to the finish on the battleground of the general strike. The Ministry expects to maintain the public services, despite defiance. M. Henri Raynaud, the Communist secretary of the federation, said that if a strike of 24 hours did not suffice it would be prolonged. It will entail the closing of factories, mines, offices, j banks, stores, cinemas, theatres and j large provision shops, the stoppage of newspapers and radio, railway, road, j water, and transport services, port j activities, work in hotels, cafes, and restaurants, and trunk and international, but not local telephone services. Post offices and schools will be closed, but the strike will not affect chemists or the distribution of food, gas, electricity and water. M. Pierre Semard. secretary-general of tlie Railwaymen's Union, has given a promise that discipline will be observed, the men remaining on the lines as a guarantee of security. The Prime Minister. M. Daladier, in a broadcast appeal to the public to support the Government's decrees, declared (hat neither dictatorship nor Fascism was intended. M. Blum, the Socialist leader, urges the Government to stop in time. He emphasises the many perils surrounding France, and adds that anybody who brings the masses of the country against the Government is guilty of high treason. j The Trades Union Confederation land the Labour Socialists are fully
aware that they are handling political j dynamite, as is indicated by their insistence that there is no political motive ' and their demand for the utmost disi cipline. Notwithstanding, protest meetings and demonstrations were held throughout France at the weekend, and sometimes there were clashes with the ! police. The Metal Workers’ Union has ' ordered its 25.000 members to remain idle.
The Farman aeroplane factory ha* locked out 3400 employees for refusing overtime.
