CONSOLIDATION OF WAI-ITI SCHOOL

IT. The Editor) Sir,—ln reading Tuesday's "Mail” 1 was surprised to read of an organised attempt by some of the “die hards” to protest against consolidation of the Wai-iti school Now, Sir, I am a mother, and although I have no children going I» that same school it grieves me to hear that there are parents selfish enough to deny their children the opportunities that a bigger and more modern school can give them. Not only that, but if those parents had any love for their children at all. surely they would never hesitate to send them free of charge on a bus going right past their door in preference to seeing them walk or cycle on the dangerous roads Some of these children I know are me tots and have quite a distance to walk and one wonder if there’s a parent who would not prefer to drive that distance on these hot summer days, than walk it It pains me to think that they are not only satisfied to see their little one walk to school, but are putting up a protest against them going on a bus Now. Sir. 1 do not know what, the objections ol' the opposition are; perhaps it is because they want their children to grow up selfish and petty. Well, they are going the right way to make them so by wanting to keep that small school open, as nothing broadens a child’s mind or makes unselfish men c.nd women oi

them as does mixing with a crowd of children their own age. Let us hope the Education Board will not take any notice of this selfish motive, for it seems hard when the majority of the Wai-iti parents want to do • justice by their children if they are to be stopped by the pettiness of a few* “die hards.”— 1 1 am. etc.. BROADMINDED MOTHER. Wai-iti, 24th November.
