NEW FIRST LORD
; LORD STANHOPE'S APPOINTMENT 1 fßy Air Mail—Own Correspondent! LONDON, sth November. Lord Stanhope's appointment as First Lord of the Admiralty will doubtless be J subject to some criticism from those disgruntled politicians who are busily accusi ing the Government of lack of vitality, i for although he has done very well at | the Board of Education be has not vet j I a ! any administrative opportunity to aci <|Uire the peculiar qualifications, including i knowledge of technical and strategic re- ' quirements, of a service department chief I who takes over at a difficult time in ini te-rnational affairs. Vet the appointment I is fully n accord with Mr Chamberlain’s ' resolve to select key post men upon whom lie can have the utmost reliance for loyally in the stirring diplomatic days that lii ahead. There must be no more quibbles or resignations over Government policy to distract the Prime Minister and his closest associates at a time when indecision may mean danger. In Lord Stanhope, therefore, he has a conscientious supporter, who will be guided both by Downing street and the experts fo the. Admiralty. There has been no British Prime Minister since Mr Lloyd George | who has exercised departmental control as • completely as Mr Chamberlain. i * _______
