POWER LINES BROUGHT DOWN
IN SOUTHERN HAWKES BAY DANNEVIRKE. 22nd November. The power supply was interrupted and telephone lines brought down in last night’s gale. The most serious interruption to the power supply was in the northern section, between Norsewood and Makotuku. The coast line was cut off till 7.30, and the Terehunga district till 9.30 this morning. The northern area was restored by midday. The main toll lines were interrupted when the head of an ironbark pole was blown off three miles north of Woodville. Thirty-five subscribers lost their services through wires being broken. Considerable damage was done to orchards in Dannevirke, and fences were razed and windows blown in. including a plateglass window in High street. The gale reached its maximum between midnight and 1 a.m.. and showed no signs of abating till 7.30 a.m.
