ORANGES FOR THE NEEDY

The Government has received early support for its surplus produce plan, for which it has allocated 10,000,000 dollars. The citrus industry has accepted a Government offer to buy 3,000,000 cases of high-quality oranges at the market price for resale at low rates to the needy oil condition that the industry withdraws 3,000,000 cases of low-quality oranges from the market. Grapefruit growers are considering a similar deal. The Secretary of Agriculture, Mr Wallace, contends that the plan is preferable tc* export subsidies. “Some want to sell to foreigners the surplus produce cheaply,’’ he commented. “Is it not better to give our own people the benefit of bargain prices?’’
