50th ANNUAL MEETING COMING JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS ELECTION OF OFFICERS The fiftieth annual meeting of the Nelson Bowling Club was held at the Club House last evening, the president. Mr A. H. Crawley, presiding over a large attendance. At the outset Mr Crawley remarked that it was the 50th year of the club’s existence and it was evident from the large attendance at the meeting that members realised the importance of such a milestone in the club’s history. He felt that all would assist to make the jubilee year one worthy of i the club. The following new members were | elected: Messrs G. D. Cameron, W. A. j Armstrong, A. J. Tarleton, the Rev. J. Hay. E. N. Ford, R. McKegg, G. Hurley.! A Robinson. D. D. Merritt. P. Baldwin. ! N Nickles, and J. Walsh. A letter was received from the Maitai Club expressing best wishes to the Nelson Club in its jubilee year. The New Zealand Bowling Association intimated that it had approved of the draft programme for the Nelson Club’s jubilee tournament. The annual report and balance sheet, which had been circulated to members and previously published in “The Mail” were taken as read. PHOTOGRAPHS OF PAST PRESIDENTS In commenting on the report the chairman stated that the total membership of the club at present was 130, which was eight less than last year. The thanks of the club were due to Mr Alan Rout for his work in securing photographs of past presidents of the club to be placed in the Club House, and be hoped that members would do all in their power to assist in the completion of that work. Thanks were also due to Mr Rout for the efficient manner in which he had carried out his duties as match recorder. SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS Continuing, Mr Crawley stated that the usual New Year and Easter tournaments had been held, the latter fixture having been considerably improved by more attention being given to the social side. After referring to the success of the goodwill tour made to the West Coast, the president mentioned the jubilee celebrations of the club, stating that it was the duty of each member to see that the programme was marked by success. It was the most important year in the history of the club to date, and full support would be forthcoming from clubs throughout the Dominion. FINANCES SATISFACTORY Commenting on the balance sheet, the chairman stated that the net profit for the year was £4 5s Bd. In view of the fact that no card evenings or art union had been held this year as in the previous year, the financial position of the club was quite satisfactory. A vote of thanks was passed to the treasurer, Mr B. C. Neale, for his work, especially the expeditious manner in which he had collected all the subscrip-
On the motion of the president the report and balance sheet were adopted, with the exception of that portion of the report referring to the winners of the Jacka Pairs, which is to be investigated by the match committee.
JACKA PAIRS Mr C. Spear moved that 21 heads be played in the Jucka Pairs competition instead of 21 points as formerly. This, he said, v ould obviate the matches being unduly prolonged. The motion was seconded by Mr A. Rout. Mr V. Vitctta spoke against this proposal, favouring the retention of the original method, which, he said, provided a change for the players. After considerable discussion, during the course of which the opinion was expressed that the matches were drawn cut because too many “burnt” heads were allowed, the motion was carried. ELECTION OF OFFICERS The election of officers resulted:— President: Mr A. H. Crawley. Vice-president: Mr S. McArthur. Hon. secretary: Mr R. W. Stiles. Hon. treasurer: Mr B. C. Neale. Committee: Messrs N. P. Ashby, E. B. Martin, E. Richards, W. Carter, F. C. J. Fantham, W. J. S. Smith. V. Vitetta. and the president and secretary ex offiCentre delegates: The President, vicepresident and secretary. Auditors: Messrs G. Brown and H. J. Robinson. THREE SELECTORS APPOINTED Mr E. Cresswell moved that as in the past year, one selector be appointed. He said that results over a number of years had proved this to be the most successful procedure. Mr C. S. Spear moved an amendment, ♦hat three selectors be appointed. Mr J. N. Stephenson, who seconded the amendment, stated that the policy of having three selectors had worked well in the past and had distinct advantages. Mr W. J. S. Smith considered that better teams could be found with three pairs of eyes. On being put to the meeting the amendment was carried, there being a number of dissentients. Nominations were then taken for the positions of selectors, the following being appointed after a ballot: Messrs S. McArthur, A. Rout and H. R. Rudman. After further discussion it was decid- ; ed that the three selectors constitute the match commitee, with the addition of ♦he president and secretary ex officio. The secretary reported on the decision made at a special meeting regarding alterations to the club’s blazer ana hat bands. The hope was expressed that members would outfit themselves 1 in the new colours at the earliest op--1 portunity. CHAMPION OF CHAMTIONS RINK j Aftrr commenting on what he called ’ the “inglorious display” of the Nelson | Club rink in the Champion of Cham-,
pions contest, Mr Stephenson moved that the committee give the responsibility of choosing this rink to one skip to be drawn from the first six or nine skips in the club. Mr Kingsland opposed the motion, stating that the winning of the contest m question was largely a matter ,of luck. It was no reflection on the selector or the team if a rink lost. They had just appointed three selectors who could do the job satisfactorily. Mr Stephenson maintained that the winning of the contest was not so much a matter of luck as choosing the best j rink in the club, and not the four best players as had been the practice in the past. On being put to the meeting the motion was lost. Mr Stephenson advocated the appointment of an assistant secretary for the jubilee year, the chairman intimating that Mr Fantham had already expressed his willingness to accept the position. On the motion of Mr A. C. Rout the following committees were appointed: Greens committee: Messrs H. KingsIr.nd, R. Fletcher, and N. Rout. 1 Gardens committee: Messrs R. Fletj cher, E. B. Martin, J. Stuart, S. Mc- ' Arthur, J. B. Passmore, and P. McGorGREEN SUPERVISOR’S SERVICES Mr W. Carter, who has been the gi een supervisor, declined nomination to the greens committee. The president, after mentioning the debt of gratitude which the club owed to Mr Carter for his work in the past, expressed the hope that they would not lose his advice and support. On the motion of Mr Cresswell a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Carter for his work over a long period of years. Prior to the conclusion of the meeting votes of thanks were passed to Mrs Crawley and Mrs Smith (for catering work), Mr E. Richards (social work), the “Evening Mail” (for reports), and the auditors. A vote of thanks to the president was carried by acclamation.
