EMBROIDERY WORK

BUTTONS POPULAR Effective decorations for bags, jumper*, lie Its and hats can be tarried out by means of small buttons, golden and tilver thread and a few reels of bright buttonhole twist. The twist is suggested because it is thick and firm enough to show up boldly against the background. A designer of lovely evening bags of velvet first discovered that small pearl buttons, preferably of ihe tyi>e with an indented and decorative surface, can create a flower-like e«.ec‘. when sewn from the centre in five or six directions with silks in gay pink, mauve and blue shades. He clustered them together, added hro\in stalks and green leaves and used gold and silverthreaas to outline the leaves. Soon he employed a

number of girls to extend the idea in various directions and produce pochettes and bags that had a >00!; of costliness altogether out of proportion to the simplicity of the materials used. Glove buttons simulating tound pearls, and glass buttons ii '♦•tferer.t hues bought on threepenny cards, are similarly capable of being worked up into dainty decorations for evening blouses and jackets. The button flowers may form merely a permanent posv, with stalks designed to give a longer and more elegant line. Altemati e*y they may be used round the neckline of a dress, or bracelet-wise round a cuff. For an evening l>elt, flat buttons of various types can be mi. *led to for. n a handsome oval ornament at the front of the waist, while at the sides they may be sparsely introduced among em broidered leaves.
