WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

AT lIOPE-RANZAU | The meeting of the Hope-Ranzau Women’s Institute was well attended and presided over by the president, Miss Baigent. Mrs Thorn, who was delegate to the council meeting held in Takaka, read a comprehensive report. A most instructive and interesting demonstration on making bags and cushions out of old felt hats was given by Mrs Beach. Miss Bagient proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Beach and presented her with v beautiful posy. The competi- j tsens resulted: Article knitted from two j ikeins of wool, Mrs Gerrish; flowers, j decorated floating bowl, Mrs Hammond j 1. The next meeting was in the form ; of a husband’s evening. Miss Baigent i t president) was in the chair and the! meeting opened with all joining in the ! singing of “Comrades and Friends.” i It was decided to send for a parcel of j goods from the returned soldiers. Mrs • Lewis and Mrs McKcnclrie entertained j members and friends with songs, Miss Dawn Freeman also gave two recitations. All joined in competitions. Supper was then served by the hostesses. The results of the competitions were: Pastry. Mrs Hill 1, Mrs Thorn 2; scones, Mrs Hill 1, Mrs Russ 2. Mr McDowell on behalf of the husbands returned thanks to the members.
