CATHEDRAL MEN’S DEBATING CLUB
GOOD ATTENDANCE LAST NIGHT The Cathedral Men s Debating Club i held a very entertaining debate last night on the subject, “That the women ! of the Empire should take a greater part in it s affairs ” There was quite a good attendance of visitors and members who fully appreciated the efforts j tllat were given by the various speakers. After hearing some of the speakI ers, one would get the impression that the men of our Empire were sadly in need of assistance from members of the lair sex in running the affairs of the | nation. Parliament especially came in lor many caustic comments, and the suggestion was given that women were ! urgently needed to brighten the place up as at present many of its members spent most of their time lounging about and sleeping ia their seats, whereas the presence of women members would at least keep them awake. The judge. Mr A. Douglas, after giving some very useful information on debating. awarded the Affirmative 474 marks and the Negative 452 marks. He complimented the club on the splendid progress it had made since his last visit and thought the club was filling a very i useful purpose in encouraging men to come out and do public speaking, which at some time or other they would find most useful Young men especially should take advantage ol the facilities, for it had been proved that many of our public men had learnt the fundamentals of public speaking at some debating club or other. The teams for the evening were:-- I Affirmative: Messrs Stephenson j (leader). Hay. Grace and Tressider. I Negative: Messrs Brodie (leader).! Parker Tankersley. and Powell. The next club night will be held on j Thursday. 16th June, when impromptu I speeches and a debate arc the order. The club will also have a debate wrh the VVaimea West Club at Waimca West on 16th July, when the subject. “That the .youth of to-day is inferior to the youth of the Victorian age” will be debated.
