CLOSELY CONTESTED GAME
NELSON DRAW WITH OLD BOYS INTERESTING PLAY AT PARK A bright game with the even scoring giving an added interest throughout resulted in the meeting of Old Boys and Nelson on No. 1 ground at the Park on Saturduj'. when the game resulted in a draw, each side scoring 3 points. Old Boys scored a try and Nelson's came from a penalty goal. The Old Boy backs were superior to their opponents but many movemenis just lacked the finish necessary to turn the advantage into points. C. Costello was again a tower of strength to his side both on attack and defence. D. Taylor played a fine game at first fiveeighths. while A. Hay was a very reliable full-back. The Nelson backs had little combination. Phillips was very sound on defence and did much to disorganise the opposing backs. Andrew (Old Boys) and Sinclair (Nelson) were I the best forwards. The game opened with the Old Boys i forwards attacking for several minutes on Nelson’s 25 and they gave their backs a chance but they could not penetrate. Nelson hooked the ball from several scrums and attacked. Wcstley. Phillips. Gamboni and Cooke taking part in a back movement. Old Boys opened the scoring with a try after good following up by Dodson, who caught the defence out of position when Costello opened the play to Taylor and Stallard, who crossed for a try ip the corner. Slallard’s kick missed. Old ! Boys 3. Nelson 0. ! Old Boys were penalised several I times for holding the ball in the scrum | and Mayers had three attempts at goal, j being successful with his third from j outside the 25 yard line near touch. Ncl- ■ ! son 3. Old Boys 3. I Donald was responsible for opening up a nice piece of play when he ran i infield from the sideline to pass to R. ! Busch and J. Busch. There was no furthe rscore before half-time. J. Busch twice figured in fine attacking runs, his first gaining 50 yards and his second nearly got him over the line 1 for a try. The Old Boys backs were given a chance, Taylor cutting in and opening the play to the other backs but | v forward pass lost their chance. Cos- ' tello. Taylor. Stallard and R. Busch, handled, the centre breaking through and giving Donald a chance but the winger was caught in the corner. Taylor was given a chance to place his team in front with a reasonably easy penally kick, but he missed. Immediately after. Mayers had a similar op-
portunity. but lie also failed. There was a bright period when Sinclair. Andrew's and Phillips led a Nelson attack to Old Boys’ 25, but Costello saved as he had done so many times in the game. Another Nelson attack was well handled by R. Busch. Mr A. Croucher was the referee.
