LARGE SUMS OF MONEY FOR BRAZIL FASCISTS BERLIN SUBSIDIES LONDON, 22nd May. Luige sums of money are being sent from Berlin to Brazil to aid the Fascist conspiracy there, says the Brazil correspondent of “The Times.” Under the heading, “The Shadow of the Swastika,” the correspondent says that the Green Shirts (Nazis) had planned a revolt for Ash Wednesday (2nd March), aiming to overthrow the Government and assassinate President Vargas and Cabinet Ministers. This, lie says, was foiled. Then the conspirators laid their plans for 10th April. The authorities found a small arsenal and a list of victims in a house belonging to Bclmiro Yalverde. Plinio Salgado, Green Shirt leader, wrote to President Vargas claiming that hi-; more exalted followers had taken control from his hands. Salgado and three other leaders lied. Salgado is reported to have taken refuge in the Japauese Embassy. The arms found in Salgado’s house swastikas. The conspiracy was found to ramify into every State. A Fascist Government had already been planned in Rio Grande ! do Sul, where the Germans are strong. In addition to the money allegedly scut from Berlin, the Nazi gospel had been lavishly preached. This Nazi activity prompted the issue of a decree forbidding foreigners to participate in Brazilian politics or maintain political newspapers oi teach foreign languages in schools. It is stated that a leading Nazi repre-
sentative in Rio Grande was asked *to ieave the country immediately. German schools in Rio Grande number 1117, with 2845 German teachers, who certainly do not confine their activities to teaching the German language.
