CONVERSION OF CAR
YOUTHS BEFORE COIR! [United Press Association, WANGANUI, This Day. Described as a gang of Wellington youths by Detective J. Murray. David Ross, aged 16 years; Eric Albert Collins, aged 18 years; Albert Edward Morris, aged 18 years; and Robert Walter Page, aged 18 years, were charged before Mr Salmon, S.M., with converting a car at Hawera U. their own use. Collins, Morris and Page were committed to the Borstal Institute for three years, and Ross to the care of the Welfare Office for two years.
The youths converted a car at Wellington on Saturday night and drove to Wanganui, thence to Hawera on Sunday, where they converted a second car. They had a jemmy in the car, also nails flattened to operate car switches and rubber tubing loaded at one end with solder. A letter was found in possession of one suggesting that he would do a “job” at Masterton.
For the conversion of the Wellington car they will appear at Palmerston North to-morrow, also on a charge of theft of benzine at Te Horo.
