OBITUARY
MR THOMAS JAMES HOVENDE.N Mr Thomas James Hovenden, who passed away suddenly at Motueka on Saturday. 21st May, was well known and greatly respected in the Motueka | district. Deceased was droving cattle and had jumped over a fence to head them off, when he collapsed and died within a few minutes. Born in Blenheim 50 years ago. he came, at an early age, to reside in Motueka. where he ! married Grace, third daughter of Mr and the late Mrs Thomas Goodman sen. j The late Mr Hovenden was a mem- i ber of the Motueka Volunteer Fire » Brigade and had a record of 25 years' service. He was also a member of the Oddfellows’ Lodge (Manchester Unity). The late Mr Hovenden leaves a widow and a family of eight—five daughters and three sons. They are: Mrs E. Bisley (Motueka), Mrs H. F Williams (Kaikoura), Mrs J. B. Man- J sell (Carterton). Messrs Robert and Howard Hovenden (Motueka). and three younger members—Mildred. May and Laurie. The funeral, which took place on Sunday afternoon, was largely attended, thirty cars forming the cortege. Many beautiful wreaths placed on the grave, testified to the esteem in which deceased was held.
Members of the Motueka Volunteer Fire Brigade attended and acted as bearers. Superintendent A. Bennett of the Nelson Fire Brigade and members also attended. The Rev. C. V. Utting of the Methodist Church, conducted the service and the funeral oration of the United Fire Brigades’ Association was delivered by Fireman O. C. Wilkinson of the Motueka Brigade. The bearers were Captain Canton. 2nd Lieut. D. Simpson, and Firemen O. C. Wilkinscon, J. King. G. Goodman, and A. Atkins.
